Responsibilities of Residents During Eid ul Azha in Residential Societies

During Eid ul Azha, residents living in residential societies or communities have certain ethical, civic, and religious responsibilities to ensure that the sacred act of Qurbani (sacrifice) is carried out peacefully, hygienically, and respectfully. Here’s a complete list:

1. Observe Religious Etiquette

  • Perform Qurbani with sincerity and respect.
  • Avoid turning it into a show-off or competition.
  • Encourage family and children to understand the spiritual significance of the sacrifice.

2. Maintain Cleanliness & Hygien

  • Do not slaughter animals in open streets, parks, or in front of neighbors’ homes.
  • Use designated Qurbani spots (if society provides any).
  • Immediately clean the area after Qurbani – dispose of blood and remains properly.
  • Use disinfectants or bleaching powder after washing the area.
  • After cleaning, spray bleach or Dettol solution in the area to avoid flies and foul smells.

3. Proper Waste Disposal

  • Use sealed bags to pack remains (offal, waste) before disposing.
  • Coordinate with the society’s waste management team or municipal services.
  • Never throw remains in open plots, drains, or near water sources.

4. Avoid Public Nuisance

  • Keep noise (animal sounds, loud talking, Qurbani videos) to a minimum.
  • Don’t hang meat or skins openly on balconies or fences.
  • Be respectful to neighbors who might not be sacrificing or have different beliefs.

5. Respect Privacy & Space of Others

  • Do not block streets or entrances with animals.
  • Avoid keeping large animals in small parking spaces or close to others’ homes.
  • Ensure animals are fed, tied securely, and do not pose risk to children or vehicles.

6. Show Unity and Share Blessings

  • Distribute meat fairly: 1/3 for family, 1/3 for relatives/friends, and 1/3 for the poor.
  • Help neighbors who are elderly, sick, or unable to perform Qurbani.
  • Don’t forget security guards, janitors, maids, and cleaners – they are often neglected but deserving.
  • Give Eidi or bonus to the society’s janitorial staff for their hard work during Eid.
  • Encourage joint Qurbani (especially for cows or camels) to reduce space and cost burden.

7. Avoid Riya (Showing Off)

  • Don’t post flashy videos or pictures of your animal or Qurbani on social media just to impress.
  • The real value is in taqwa (piety), not luxury.
  • Avoid sharing graphic images or videos of the slaughter.
  • Don’t record videos just to show off your animal’s size or price — this contradicts the spirit of humility.
  • Not discussing animal price excessively.

8. Inform & Coordinate in Advance

  • Inform your neighbors and society management about the time and place of your Qurbani.
  • Use community WhatsApp groups to share hygiene tips and disposal timings.
  • Coordinate with others to avoid all residents sacrificing at the same time, which may create congestion and waste buildup.

9. Use Temporary Setups for Clean Qurbani

  • Set up a temporary tent or plastic sheet area to maintain hygiene and contain blood.
  • Place a plastic drum or bucket for water, so you can clean the place immediately after.
  • After cleaning, spray bleach or Dettol solution in the area to avoid flies and foul smells.

10. Educate Children

  • Teach kids the true meaning of Eid ul Azha — obedience, sacrifice, and sharing.
  • Involve them in meat packing, cleaning, or distribution, not just selfies with the animal.
  • Encourage compassion, not pride or fear, toward animals.

11. Centralized Qurbani

If possible, opt for centralized or collective Qurbani organized by your masjids, Jamat e Islami, other trusted management or society management. It’s efficient, clean, and reduces individual burden.

“Eid ul Azha is a sacred act of devotion, not a display of wealth. In societies, our actions affect others — so carry out your Qurbani with responsibility, cleanliness, and care for neighbors.”
